Design Information.

Hypatia, 350 – 415 AD

Hypatia was the daughter of the Egyptian philosopher/mathematician Theon, who was also her tutor.

Early in her life she displayed exceptional ability in mathematics and languages, and taught math, astronomy and philosophy at the university in Alexandria.

She also taught the use of the astrolabe in astronomy, and she had a particular interest in conic sections, those shape that are formed when a cone is sliced through at various angles.

Nevertheless, throughout her life she needed to contend with public opinion not accepting a woman teaching mathematics and especially the astrolabe.
She was eventually murdered by a fanatical mob.
