Design Information 

Leonhard Euler, pronounced "oil-er" 1707 - 1783.

Euler was Swiss by birth, and the most prominent mathematician in the eighteenth century, worked mainly in St Petersburg, but also in Berlin.

He was a prolific writer, making major contributions to  mathematics, physics, astronomy, as well as in other areas of interests. Even after he became blind he still produced many articles  for some years, using a scribe. 

His many contributions in mathematics include the exponential function 'e', whose value can be calculated from a non terminating series, and is approximately 2.718.
This is referred to as Euler's number.

There is also Euler's equation, e^(iφ) = Cosφ + iSinφ.
For φ= π this leads to e^(iπ) = Cos(π) + iSin(π), = -1,   [Cos(π)=-1, and Sin(π)=0].

e^(iπ) +1 = 0, which is known as Euler's equation. 

The extraordinary aspect of this identity is
'e' is an irrational number,
'π' is an irrational number, and 
'i' is outside the usual number system, and yet

e^(iπ) = -1, an ordinary rational number!

'e' is used extensively in mathematics, physics, as well as in electrical engineering, and is the bases for the Napierian or natural logarithms.
'e' and 'π'  have been extensively studied and calculated in many different ways.
