Design Information

Archimedes (287 212 BCE) did not directly calculate the value of π, but rather set upper and lower limits for what it could be. The length of the outer edge of the smaller polygon was clearly less than the circumference of the circle, and the length of the outer edge of the larger polygon was larger than the circumference.

He could  then calculate 2 values of π, one that was too small, and the other that was too big. He could then increase accuracy by increasing the number of sides of the polygons.

Since the time of Archimedes  π has been calculated in many different ways, to any number of decimal places.
