Design Information

Emilie du Chatelet, 1706 – 1749

Emilie was a member of an aristocratic family and was tutored at home, She demonstrated her capabilities by mastering several languages, as well as mathematics and physics.

A significant achievement was the translation of Isaac Newton's Principia, and the addition of a complete new section on the conservation of the total energy of a system, and not just the kinetic energy. But her major work, Foundations of Physics gained wide acceptance across Europe, and was reprinted a number times, and translated into several languages.

Because of Emilie's position in the French society, she was able to establish contact with many of the mathematical and intellectual giants in Europe, such as Bernoulli, Euler and especially Voltaire.

In the last year of her life she had an affair with a poet, and subsequently had a baby. Unfortunately, because of complications she died a few days later, and the baby died. before she got to 2 years.
